Flatbed-Specific Requirements

Tarping

Most lumber, steel, and building materials require tarping. Drivers charge $50-150 extra for tarping. Always confirm tarping requirements with the broker before booking.

Securement (FMCSA Cargo Securement Rules)

Minimum tie-downs based on cargo length and weight. Coils need coil racks. Chains, straps, and binders must meet working load limits. Violations = $1,000+ fines.

Oversize/Overweight Permits

Loads over 8'6" wide, 13'6" tall, or 80,000 lbs require permits. Each state has different rules. Plan routes carefully - not all roads allow oversize.

Questions to Ask on Every Flatbed Load

  • 1. What are the exact dimensions and weight?
  • 2. Is tarping required? (If so, request tarp pay)
  • 3. What securement equipment is needed?
  • 4. Any permits required? Who obtains them?
  • 5. Is this a live load or drop and hook?
  • 6. Any special loading/unloading equipment needed?
  • 7. What type of flatbed? (Standard, step deck, RGN)
