Hotshot Dispatching Guide: Expedited Freight Profits
Hotshot trucking is booming. Learn how to dispatch expedited freight and maximize carrier earnings.
What is Hotshot Trucking?
Hotshot trucking uses medium-duty trucks (typically 1-ton pickups like Ford F-350, Ram 3500, or Chevy 3500) with gooseneck or bumper-pull trailers to haul time-sensitive freight. The name comes from the oilfield industry where urgent parts needed to arrive "hot."

Hotshot DOT Requirements
MC Authority
Required for interstate for-hire operations. Same as semi-trucks. $300 FMCSA filing fee.
ELD Requirement
Required if GVWR exceeds 10,001 lbs AND driver operates beyond 150 air-miles. Some hotshots structure to stay exempt.
CDL Requirement
NOT required if GVWR stays under 26,001 lbs. This is a major advantage - drivers only need a regular license.
